Project SMILE

Founded by Gateway Entertainment in 2002, Project SMILE (Sharing Magic In Love Everywhere) uniquely combines the art of magic with community service. The initiative promotes “magic literacy” by equipping participants with performance skills and encouraging them to use those skills to bring joy to underserved communities.

A pioneer in service-learning, Project SMILE partnered with schools across Singapore to train thousands of students in magic, leadership and volunteerism before they applied their learning through meaningful community outreach. The programme was also integrated into school curricula, empowering young people to serve with confidence, creativity and compassion.

In 2005, Project SMILE became part of 千牵手(Qian Qian Shou —’Thousand Linking Hands’), a partnership between Singapore and China that engaged youths in leadership, volunteerism and cultural exchange through the art of magic. Beginning in Shanghai, the programme expanded to several cities in China and achieved its vision of bringing together 1,000 pairs of hands in service to the community by its final edition in 2015.

By its conclusion in 2019, Project SMILE had trained over 20,000 students across Singapore and the region, while touching the lives of thousands of beneficiaries in schools, hospitals, care centres and community organisations, demonstrating the power of the performing arts to inspire service and create lasting social impact.
